This also includes the restrictions for the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment’s. RoHS is a WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment). Especially when it comes to disposal of electronica waste and equipment’s.
The original RoHS, also known as Directive 2002/95/EC was originated in the European Union in 2002. It restricts the use of six hazardous materials ( Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium (Cr-VI), Polybrominated Biphenyl (PBB), Polybrominated Biphenyl ether (PBDE) found in electrical and electronic goods. All related products in the EU market since July 1, 2006 must pass RoHS fulfilment
Certification Steps
- 1. Testing: Either on-site or XRF testing is done to verify values of the ten restricted RoHS substances.
- 2. Process Audit: Inspect all relevant manufacturing processes used towards RoHS compliance on-site.
- 3. Documentation Review:, this includes reviewing the Bill of Materials (BoM), Technical File, assembly drawings, materials statements, test reports, and conformance/compliance certifications from all vendors & suppliers.
Technical File must contain the following details:
- General product explanation and design structure information
- Risk evaluation of materials, parts, and subassemblies
- Agreement information on materials, parts, and subassemblies
- Manufacturing certification and records
- Balanced standards, specifications, and conformity procedures.
- 4. Certification Statement: After a successful audit, a RoHS Certificate of Compliance (also known as a Certificate of Conformity or Declaration of Conformity) is issued.
